A virtual “coffee with the board” will be held May 14 at 3 p.m. for Ford’s Colony residents. Using the Go To Meeting app, HOA board vice president Carmen Hegge-Kleiser will serve as host.
All residents interested in joining the event are asked to register no later than May 12. The “coffee” will be limited to the first 20 responses, and priority will go to those who have not participated in a coffee with the board session before.
The board specifically encourages residents with school-age children, who might have more flexible work schedules at the moment, to join the session.
Register by sending your name, phone number and email address to Carmen Hegge-Kleiser. The Go To Meeting link and a call-in number will be provided to all confirmed participants via email on May 13.
This will be the eighth coffee with the board, an initiative begun last year to increase communication with residents in a more personal setting.
THANK YOU to my mother Nancy Donnelly for putting her sewing talents to work to help my friends and clients during this crazy time.

Wow! What a feather in the cap for Williamsburg, to be crowned as “the South’s best small town 2020” by Southern Living magazine.
The sub-title to the feature story just published: “The colonial charmer is having a modern moment.”
After an introduction that highlights Williamsburg’s traditional and historic past, the article states: “Today, the appeal lies in its ability to perform a delicate dance between old and new, between honoring its past and embracing a more modern future. ‘Williamsburg has grown so much in the past few years,’ says Brittany Rolston, owner of The Shoe Attic near CW. ‘People aren’t coming here just for the history or theme parks anymore. They’re coming to enjoy the town.’ ”
And we enjoy the kind of kudo that tells the country what we already know: It’s hard to beat the ‘burg.

Make a note of the next “Coffee with the Board” event to be held Monday, March 16 at the community services building.
Coffee with the Board meetings are planned every other month in 2020. The March meeting will focus on, but not be limited to, the concerns of Ford’s Colony families with minor children. The meeting will be hosted by Carmen Hegge-Kleiser, vice-president of the Ford’s Colony Homeowners’ Association board of directors.
These meetings are held in a smaller room better for conversation, so space is limited. Please contact Carmen to make a reservation. Carmen.firstname.lastname@example.org.
When Daylight Saving Time (blessedly) arrives March 8, why not take it as a cue to test and possibly swap out your home’s smoke detectors?
You know it’s time to change the batteries by the sometimes annoying, but always necessary, “chirp” that emits from a power-drained device. But when to completely upgrade a smoke detector?
Ah, that answer is less obvious.
The standard endorsed by FEMA is every 10 years. And unless you have the actual purchase receipt or a faultless memory, you need to physically remove the detector from the ceiling and check the manufacture date on the back of it.
If it’s been 10 years since the device was made, swap it out for a brand new one to be certain it is in peak condition. It’s a small chore for great peace of mind. And then, don’t forget to check the batteries every month as well.
Push the “test” button, so your home safely passes with flying colors.
