Notable FC happenings

A traditional Thanksgiving dinner featuring turkey and house-cured pork loin ham, a chef-prepared dinner for four and a personalized fitting for a new set of golf clubs are a few of the attractive items up for online auction through Ford’s Colony Country Club.

The Ford’s Colony Charity Classic, which will be open until Nov. 11, will benefit these nonprofit organizations: FISH Williamsburg, which supports local residents who need food, clothing and financial help, Clublife Charities, and the ClubCorp Employee Partners Care Foundation.

All interested can access the auction website, view all the available items and make bids – or simply donate money – at  https://go.rallyup.com/fordscolony.

Also, a pharmacist provided by Ford’s Colony HOA will give flu shots, including the “high dose” senior flu shot, Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon at the swim and tennis club located at 165 St. Andrews Drive.

No appointment is necessary, although those coming for a shot are reminded to bring their insurance card.

School supply drive for FC students

Williamsburg-James City County students will begin the school year learning virtually, but they will still need supplies at home. You can help by donating items into two totes that have been placed outside the Community Services Building.

Supplies most needed are:

  • Dry erase markers
  • Glue sticks
  • Pencils
  • Composition notebooks for elementary students, who do not use spiral notebooks or loose-leaf paper.
  • Crayola crayons; they work best and hold up longer than other brands.

Cash donations are also welcome! Checks can be made out to WJCC and put into the drop box — not the totes — also outside the CSB.

More reopening news from HOA

Here are a few highlights of Phase 3 reopening as it pertains to facilities at Ford’s Colony. All updated gathering restrictions and guidelines in Ford’s Colony can be found at fchoa.org:

  • On July 1, pickleball, tennis courts, bocce and basketball courts and the Westbury Park pool and bathrooms reopened. A reminder that these are for use by residents and family members, not outside guests. Required reservation information and a liability waiver can also be found at fchoa.org

  • The Westbury pool is limited to 120 people and the Swim and Tennis club pool 80. Dedicated lap swim and water exercise periods will be managed separately and are limited to 24 people per morning period.

The HOA suggests residents take numerous health and safety precautions including:

  • maintaining a 10-foot distance from residents who aren’t family members when at a facility
  • using hand sanitizer before entering a facility and after each activity
  • masks are strongly encouraged in outdoor public areas when in close proximity to others except when swimming, exercising or in the case of a health condition. Facial coverings are required for anyone entering a clubhouse or exercise studio.

Please continue to stay safe out there.

Have virtual coffee with the board

A virtual “coffee with the board” will be held May 14 at 3 p.m. for Ford’s Colony residents. Using the Go To Meeting app, HOA board vice president Carmen Hegge-Kleiser will serve as host.

All residents interested in joining the event are asked to register no later than May 12. The “coffee” will be limited to the first 20 responses, and priority will go to those who have not participated in a coffee with the board session before.

The board specifically encourages residents with school-age children, who might have more flexible work schedules at the moment, to join the session.

Register by sending your name, phone number and email address to Carmen Hegge-Kleiser. The Go To Meeting link and a call-in number will be provided to all confirmed participants via email on May 13.

This will be the eighth coffee with the board, an initiative begun last year to increase communication with residents in a more personal setting.

Welcome to the “South’s best small town”

Wow! What a feather in the cap for Williamsburg, to be crowned as “the South’s best small town 2020” by Southern Living magazine.

The sub-title to the feature story just published: “The colonial charmer is having a modern moment.”

Indeed!

After an introduction that highlights Williamsburg’s traditional and historic past, the article states: “Today, the appeal lies in its ability to perform a delicate dance between old and new, between honoring its past and embracing a more modern future. ‘Williamsburg has grown so much in the past few years,’ says Brittany Rolston, owner of The Shoe Attic near CW. ‘People aren’t coming here just for the history or theme parks anymore. They’re coming to enjoy the town.’ ”

And we enjoy the kind of kudo that tells the country what we already know: It’s hard to beat the ‘burg.
