What’s in an FC name: Seminole

Live sports-starved folks will receive a treat on their TVs this Sunday afternoon — a charity golf match between two-man teams of PGA Tour stars. World No. 1 golfer Rory McIlroy and former No. 1 Dustin Johnson will play popular stars Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff at the fabled — but very private — Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla.

Ford’s Colony’s cul-de-sac named Seminole, with about a half-dozen houses on the Firestone side of FC, is not quite as exclusive as its namesake (ha), and certainly not as ancient.

Seminole Golf Club dates to 1929, when famed golf architect Donald Ross set to work developing the 140-acre property. The picturesque course, which runs along the dunes of the Atlantic Ocean, quickly became home to a corporate and political Who’s Who, with members such as Henry Ford II, Joseph P. Kennedy, Robert Vanderbilt, Jack Chrysler, Paul Mellon and Phillip Armour.

Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Ford played at Seminole, and now so does quarterback Tom Brady; he joined when he signed with the Tampa Bay Bucs this NFL off-season.

One of the intrigues of Sunday’s match, aside from the return of pro sports of a fashion, is that Seminole has never been seen on television. Even non-golf fans might tune in for a bit to check out what pretty pictures the 91-year-old course affords.

It’s easy to drop a line in FC

A walk around Ford’s Colony most days tells you dropping a line into one of the 13 ponds stocked and maintained by the Homeowners’ Association has become even more popular during these stay-at-home times.

But remember, there are rules — the HOA’s, as well as those of the Va. Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries — that need to be followed for the benefit of the community. Among them:

  1. Everyone over 16 must have a fishing license that can be purchased at sporting goods stores or online.
  2. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
  3. Only Virginia residents may get a license, except for active military stationed in Virginia and students boarding here.
  4. The HOA limits fishing to catch and release at all ponds.
  5. Barbless hooks must be used, and only residents – or guests accompanied by a resident – may fish in a pond.
  6. Vehicles must be parked in the nearest cul-de-sac or side road, not on common grass area or leisure trails.
  7. Interior golf-course ponds are off-limits. FC Country Club courses are private property.
  8. And the HOA asks that you be a good neighbor by not fishing from a resident’s yard, unless invited, cleaning up around you and being kind to nearby wildlife.

Come for Coffee with the Board

Make a note of the next “Coffee with the Board” event to be held Monday, March 16 at the community services building.

Coffee with the Board meetings are planned every other month in 2020. The March meeting will focus on, but not be limited to, the concerns of Ford’s Colony families with minor children. The meeting will be hosted by Carmen Hegge-Kleiser, vice-president of the Ford’s Colony Homeowners’ Association board of directors.

These meetings are held in a smaller room better for conversation, so space is limited. Please contact Carmen to make a reservation. Carmen.fchoabod@cox.net.

Club names membership director

Members of the Ford’s Colony Country Club have welcomed a new membership director, Tony Null. He comes to Ford’s Colony after working in Raleigh, N.C. for nearly a decade as director of communications and marketing for the North Ridge Country Club.

Null has a long Virginia history, however. He was raised in Newport News, earned a degree in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth University and is the former membership director at Kingsmill Resort.

Ford’s Colony residents can reach out to Null for country-club membership information at 757-258-4100.

New recycling: Remember these rules

With a new curbside recycling company, TFC Recycling, stepping in July 1 in James City County, it’s a good time to revisit some helpful rules of recycling to make the process go smoothly.

The most important of all is knowing what is acceptable for the recycling program and what is not, so let this info from the county’s website help:

ACCEPTABLE — plastic bottles and jugs, cardboard, mixed paper, metal cans, glass bottles and jars. All other items are considered contamination to the recycling stream.

Remember, it is NOT necessary to crush cans before placing them in the recycling bin. Yes, that saves space, but the Aluminum Association notes crushing cans may actually make cans harder to sort at the recycling center.

Plastic jugs MAY be crushed, and metal bottle caps are OK. Plastic caps are not.

NOT ACCEPTABLE: plastic bags! (Take them to a grocery store that has marked bins for plastic bags out front), light bulbs, stretch wrap, pizza boxes, food waste, yard waste, diapers (please, no!) and long items that tangle such as rope, carpet, hoses, wire and Christmas lights.

Bins with visible contaminants will not be emptied. Also, the county asks that you do not leave items such as cardboard on the curb outside of the bin. It won’t be picked up.

If you haven’t received your new bin, it should arrive this week.

Residents may recycle for free through September. They may opt-out of the monthly $7 program as of October 1.

The county has produced this video to help explain the recycling program.
